The Carpetbag Theatre, Inc’s original production is made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Theater Project and an outpouring of stories and first-hand accounts from Black residents of Knoxville, TN.
Through a series of stories, monologues, and conversations with some of our most beloved friends, neighbors and family members, this show gives audience members a glimpse into the lives of Black Knoxvillians navigating a global pandemic while simultaneously dealing with issues of racism and classism, calling attention to how the first 16 months were doubly difficult for those of African descent in East Tennessee.
This production will be followed by a discussion that investigates art-making during a global pandemic that addresses the challenges of our time. We will also discuss the intersections of Blackness and disability in an ongoing pandemic and ways that we can create cultures of care.
