Mbongi is an Indigenous African concept from the Bakongo Bantu people meaning: “community, house without rooms/walls [without separation], and learning place.” Mbongi teaches us that it is through community that we solve our problems and also nourish our creative ideas, suggestions and innovations. This requires transparency and being real with one another instead of being conflict avoidant. Fear of conflict is a tool of colonization, capitalism, and white supremacy to keep masses subdued so that injustices and harm are not challenged and continue. It is through community that we support one another, survive, and thrive. Indigenous peoples globally know that the ancestors, nature, and the stars are a part of community too. We can cultivate wisdom from our ancestral philosophies and from the insights the stars offer, to support community efforts of justice and to cultivate healing structures through culturally relevant trauma-informed peer support. Our Ancestors were practicing transformative justice, healing justice, disability justice, Intersectionality, communal values and the values of related liberation movements long before these modern categories for them that have unfortunately that been co-opted (distorted or diluted to preserve White supremacy, colonialism, colonization, and harm). This circle is for Black people only.
